The manifestation of STEPHEN J. CLARKE, GIVER OF LIGHT

INTRODUCTION

This all started when I offered Stephen a job for a couple of weeks. I think it’s more or less self-explanatory.

Re: Stephen Clarke – Shop Manager

Dear Mr Garrard (Proprietor)

Thank you for your fax dated 13/9/96, and for confirming the details regarding my future take over of Uniquely Stephen Clarke Publications.

I should indeed be interested to learn more of extending my contract for a further two days and would indeed welcome some more information on this matter regarding terms of employment etc etc.

With reference to paragraph four, ‘Duties to include …’ I’m afraid all engagements concerning ‘theatrical impromptu performances’ will have to be specially negotiated with my agent Miss S N Palmer of Northload Street Productions, and also any publicity needed for the event will have to be arranged with my publicist in Glastonbury Miss Elizabeth Beech-Seymour of Millennium/Eleventh Hour Promotions. I would appreciate it if you would pursue these matters with them personally.

Finally, it will presumably be necessary to liaise with some of your other workers about keys and petty cash floats etc etc.

I would be grateful if you would give these matters your earliest attention.

I look forward to hearing from you

Yours sincerely

Stephen J Clarke

Dear Mr Clarke,

Thank you for your fax message of yesterday’s date, which may have far-reaching implications.

A change of name to ‘Uniquely Stephen Clarke Publications’ would, for instance, necessitate a complete redesign of the shop front and a fresh ‘corporate image’.

No doubt you have already considered this, and I would be very grateful for any sketches, photo-montages or scale models which you may have which would help towards this aspect of the project. They will be passed on to my Decor Consultant Mr Taras Kosikowsky.

You may wish to contact Mr Kosikowsky directly. He is after all a well known art therapist. He is available by Fax on 01458 834040.

As regards the other matters you raised: at present the shop has no ‘cover’ for Thursday & Friday October 24th & 25th. There is also the possibility of some part-time work on the intervening Mondays. However, I feel it would be best to discuss these peripheral matters during your primary period of engagement.

I have not yet been in touch with Miss Palmer or Miss Seymour-Beech, but I will let you know of any progress in that direction.

I appreciate your concern about keys, petty cash floats etc, but since most of my other workers will be unavailable during this period it will be necessary for my Staff Liaison Officer Bruce K. Garrard to be on the premises, and he will be able to deal with such matters.

Finally, with reference to the ‘customer relations’ aspect of you forthcoming duties, could you please confirm that you have a working knowledge of French, Spanish, German, Russian, American English and Jamaican Patois, since all these languages are necessary for working on Glastonbury High Street.

I look forward to your impending period of employment.

With kind regards,

Bruce Garrard (Proprietor)Stephen J Clarke

Dear Mr Clarke,

Further to my Fax of 14th Sept: Please note that you have not yet confirmed your necessary linguistic skills. Could you also please confirm that you are not pregnant, since one of our workers recently took a day off to have a baby, and this proved to be most inconvenient.

I have been in contact with Miss Beech-Seymour, and all arrangements are in hand. Prior to the leaflets and posters being produced, I have inserted the following small ad in the ‘Glastonbury Oracle’:

STEPHEN CLARKE (ex- Gog theatre, Channel 4 TV) will be appearing live during October for a limited run at Unique Publications, Glastonbury. Stephen will be performing impromptu theatre pieces of his own devising or from the Classics. Should you have any requests (Shakespearean soliloquies, Goon Show scripts, etc) please fax him in advance on 0181 749 4270.

I note that you have offered no inspirational items as regards the redesign of our shop and corporate image. My Decor Consultant is, naturally, greatly disappointed, and has threatened to fill the premises with plants. I trust you can help to head off this unwarranted influence from the ‘Green’ movement.

Please pull your finger out.

Re: Stephen Clarke – Shop Manager

Dear Mr Garrard (Proprietor)

Thank you for your fax dated 24th September 1996.

I must take this opportunity to apologise for my appalling behaviour. I am writing this now in the hope that we may rebuild the shattered remains of our relationship.

After receiving your previous fax I was thrown into a crisis of conscience and began to wonder whether I had indeed chosen the right path. After a deep and tortuous period of soul-searching I came to the conclusion that I needed to completely renounce all my previous desires for fame and fortune and all that is caught up in that hideous and materialistic lifestyle. So I decided instead to dedicate myself to the quest for a complete spiritual cleansing and realignment of my various chakras. As you can imagine, after having made this commitment to a new and pure existence I was unable to enter into any correspondence with any of my previous followers.

However, your last fax reached out from the depths of my past. I feel exhilarated, rebirthed, ready to face life again. There is a way forward*, your frankness has inspired me to take up the baton, to live again. I can feel the mists clearing and the voice of my higher being calling me:

Back,
Back, back …
Back back back
Come back
Come
Back back back back (etc)

With reference to my publicist Miss Seek & Bemore, I will no longer be requiring her services, and have terminated her contract forthwith as a statement of my commitment to reject the old ways and to look forward to the new. I have read your publicity material with interest but trust the universe to provide**  me with whatever I may need to complete the next stage of the Journey.

I must say that in celebration of this new beginning*** I am completely at one with your décor consultant’s feeling to fill the premises with plants symbolising life and rebirth and the power of the earth over man’s greed and inhumanity to man.

I do so look forward to our next meeting as I am eager to share this new teaching and to join with you and your other workers in celebrating my return to Glastonbury.

With reference to the above, maybe a series of special weekend sharings @ £2300.23 per head could be manifested. I would be happy to enlighten others in your town who I believe are also on a similar quest to ‘find the light’ and would benefit greatly from hearing about my new publications on personal growth and development. I suggest you contact my financial facilitator Miss Preach-Paymore for further details.

Yours in anticipation of the dawning of a new beginning …

Stephen J. Clarke

Re: Stephen Clarke – Shop Manager

Dear Mr Garrard (Proprietor)

Thank you for your fax dated 25th September 1996.

As I have now discovered the joys of divine truth, purity of being and recognising that we must also all face up to The Darkness Within* I must share with you that I was rather alarmed not to have received the copy of the ‘Poster’ for the exhibition which you promised me.

Has there been a breakdown in communication? Maybe one of your workers was not able to work the fax machine properly, in which case we shall need a major overhaul of staff procedure and introduction of a specially devised Staff Enhancement Programme which could be very costly.

I am also rather disturbed by the constant refrences to the ‘Goon Show Scripts’. I appreciate we have to reach as wide an audience as possible but I’m not sure I want to follow this particular path. I am sure I need not remind you that I am presently questing the light and feel that idle humour and satirical sketches are more of a distraction and hindrance along the way to enlightenment.

I trust I can share these most sincere and deeply felt thoughts with you, and that this honesty can only serve to strengthen the bond that exists between myself and my many followers in your community.

Yours in anticipation of the dawning of a new beginning …

Dear Mr Clarke,

I am glad that you have now received a copy of the poster, and that it inspires you with such dynamic energy. I feel the Exhibition is likely to be a very poular attraction. I cannot imagine why you did not receive the poster before – I oversaw the operation of the Fax machine personally. Perhaps you did receive it but did not realise it was a poster.

I am sure you will be equally pleased with the design for your new book cover, which my art department has completed as a matter of urgency in anticipation of an early publication date. I attach a copy for your comments and textual corrections.

Yours sincerely,

Re: Stephen Clarke – Giver of Light

Dear Mr Garrard (Proprietor)

Thank you for your fax dated 27th September 1996.

Oh joy of joys, we are as one, we share the same vision, we are on the same path. The book cover that your design department has prepared surpasses my wildest dreams of perfection.

Only I was wondering if maybe my image could be a little more central, perhaps superimposed over a background of blue sky and clouds with streams of light and colour shooting out from my being. This would represent the tremendous force of energy I feel is bursting forth and spreading out to the rest of my followers. Also I think the typeface should be a little more joyous, and I now go under the name of Stephen J. Clarke Giver Of Light. I would also be interested in how you plan to design the covers for the other four publications as it would obviously be beneficial to release them as a set.

Yours in anticipation of the dawning of a new beginning

Dear Mr Clarke,

Thank you for your Fax of September 28th. I am so glad you are pleased with the proposed book cover; I will look into the technical aspects of including “streams of light and colour” etc. It may be possible to print them using thermo-luminescent ink, which should do the trick.

At this stage, with the publication date set and arrangements for the book launch well advanced, it would be helpful to have something from you in the way of text. After all, this is what books generally consist of. However, it will not be entirely necessary; perhaps you could just jot down a few ideas and we could have the book “ghosted” by one of the very competent new-age copy-writers here in Glastonbury.

I enclose a memo which I have just received from a Miss “Lizbeth Lunar Luminosity”, who describes you as her “client” and who has some very radical ideas regarding the arrangements for your forthcoming Manifestation. I attach a copy for your information. I am not sure of the significance of her deliberate mis-spelling of the word “dispense”.

I do understand that you are in a delicate transitional phase and risk the total disintegration of your personality. Coming to Glastonbury at this time will be a Great Act of Courage on your part.

Finally, I have informed the “Temple of the Golden Mist” of your various professional and personal needs, and they will be furnishing you with details of their very reasonable rates. However, I was not altogether aware at that stage of the need for stabling facilities for a variety of large and dangerous zoological specimens. This may add considerably to their tariff. However, I am sure there will be no serious difficulties.

Please let me know if there are any outstanding matters needing consideration. I will be in touch before your arrival with any last-minute loose ends which may need tidying up.

Yours sincerely

Bruce Garrard (Proprietor)
